Description
Upholding the human rights of Indigenous Peoples is essential to achieving justice, reconciliation, and meaningful partnerships.
This course gives employees foundational knowledge of the human rights of Indigenous Peoples, including the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, its legal and moral importance, and its global and national impact.
Through history, legal context, and real examples, participants explore the foundational right to self-determination, and Canada’s evolving relationship with the UN Declaration. Three modules cover the human rights of Indigenous Peoples, key principles of the UN Declaration, and rights implementation. The course promotes reflection on Global Affairs Canada’s role, Free Prior and Informed Consent, and moving from awareness to meaningful action at home and abroad.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- describe the importance of the tools of the international human rights system to support the self-determination of Indigenous Peoples and their survival, dignity, and well-being
- explain the history of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, why it is groundbreaking, and why many provisions are considered customary international law
- recall the key principles and articles of the UN Declaration and explain their relevance to Global Affairs Canada
- recognize how to make space to ensure the human rights of Indigenous Peoples are promoted and upheld and draft an action plan
