Description

Preparing for an international posting involves more than logistics. It requires emotional and psychological readiness. This session provides practical strategies and insights to help participants navigate the unique challenges of living and working abroad.

This is a participatory group session designed for active involvement. Participants will engage in collaborative discussions to share perspectives and experiences.

Topics include:

  • expatriation lifecycle: understanding the stages of adjustment and cultural transition
  • stress and anxiety management/expatriation: identifying stressors related to postings and exploring tools and resources for resilience
  • adaptation strategies: how to respond effectively to new environments and team dynamics
  • cultural Integration: the role of Canadian values in shaping your experience overseas

 

Learning objectives

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • reflect on the psychological impact of an overseas posting
  • recognize potential challenges and positive opportunities during the transition
  • apply practical tools to manage stress, adapt culturally, and maintain mental well-being

 Notes: The session is open to Government of Canada employees and provincial co-locators who are posted to one of Canada’s missions abroad. Government of Canada employees and co-locators will need to contact Learning-Apprentissage@international.gc.ca to register.
