Description

Surge Responders are Global Affairs Canada (GAC) employees at Headquarters who volunteer to provide surge capacity during international crises to handle enquiries from Canadian citizens and other eligible persons who may be impacted. This course will allow you to acquire knowledge on how to work effectively as a Surge Responder while protecting your own wellbeing.

Learning objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • perform the duties of a Surge Responder during an Emergency Response, including interacting with the public verbally and in writing, and using GAC’s consular management system (ORBIS)
  • understand how GAC structures itself and works with other government departments to respond to a crisis abroad
  • access and utilize key Surge Responder resources, such as call scripts, guidance and refresher training videos
  • identify and mitigate potential mental health risks of working in a high-pressure environment interacting with distressed persons affected by an emergency
